Intestinal parasites in humans symptoms, diagnosis and treatment
|
It can be assumed that you may have parasites if you have a medical
record of extensive periods of bloating and loose bowel movements.
There are tests that diagnose human parasite infections:
- The ova and parasites test that entails three separate tests of
stool samples, each sample taken at two day intervals. This is necessary
for confirmation because some results may be false negative.
- Blood in feces is shown through a hemoccult test
- Cysts in the organs are unveiled by CT scans and biopsies
- Decreased red cell production, antibodies and ferritin are exposed
by a regular full blood count test.
Symptoms
of parasites
You may be affected by intestinal parasites if you experience most
or all of these reported parasites in humans symptoms:
Weight loss, tiredness and fatigue; mucus in stool; bloating, gas
and flatulence; paleness of the skin, which may be evident when you
look at the palms and the inner eyelids; mild diarrhea that lasts
for weeks to months, particularly if occurring a few days after traveling
to a foreign territory with little focus on sanitation. There may
be also visible evidence of intestinal parasites in humans symptoms,
in the form of worms in the stool. In some patients, there may be
no symptoms at all. Spread of the disease can be caused by contact
with the feces of the infected.
More tangible symptoms of intestinal parasites in humans that have
been experienced are colitis and ulcers caused by the parasite entamoeba
histolytica, stools tinged with blood or pus, or perhaps both, and
abdominal cramps. Worms may be visible in the stool, if the parasite
with which the patient is infected is intestinal worms.
One might ask, "Now that I have confirmed that my symptoms of
ill health are caused by a parasite, how do I get rid of them?"
Well, it is important that the correct applications of treatment be
applied for the best effect. Some anti parasite preparations include
furazolidone, quinacrine and metronidazole. There is even treatment
available for pregnant and nursing women: a drug by the name of paramomycin
that does not filter into the bloodstream. To see the results of any
medicinal treatment, you have to follow the instructions of your treating
physician. It is of paramount importance to treat the source of infection
in order to permanently eradicate the parasites.
Now that you have successfully treated the parasite infection, you
want to minimize the risk of getting them back. It is easy, as the
measures to be implemented are basic hygiene. Wash hands with soap
after using the toilet, and before eating. Make sure that food is
cooked thoroughly - eating meats rare instead of well done puts you
at jeopardy. All fresh fruit and vegetables should be washed before
consumption.
